This morning I found myself staring at the date on my calendar—March 19—and remembering that on this day in 1721, Robert Walpole became Britain's first Prime Minister. Not because the title was formally created, but because he simply was what no one had quite been before. No grand ceremony, no Constitutional amendment. Just function preceding form, as it so often does in history.

I'd been reorganizing my bookshelves when I noticed this, surrounded by volumes that argue endlessly about when institutions "really" begin. The coffee had gone cold in my cup while I stood there, one hand still on a biography of Walpole, thinking about how we impose clean boundaries on messy realities. The morning light was slanting through the window, illuminating dust motes that danced above the pages—everything suspended, neither settled nor fully in motion.

Later, at the library, I overheard two students debating whether a movement "counted" if it had no manifesto. One insisted structure came first; the other argued passion did. I almost interrupted to mention Walpole, but held back. Sometimes the best teaching is just listening and letting people discover the paradox themselves.
