Most of us know that feeling — you wake up tired, look at your phone before your feet hit the floor, and by the time you're making coffee, your brain is already spinning through everything that needs to get done.
It's not a discipline problem. It's just how modern mornings tend to go.
The idea of a "perfect morning routine" can feel like one more thing to fail at. Wake at 5am, meditate for twenty minutes, journal, exercise, eat a nutritious breakfast — all before 7am? For most people with real lives and real sleep debt, that's not a routine. It's a fantasy.
What actually helps is much smaller.
Pick one thing to do before you look at your phone. That's it. It could be drinking a glass of water. Stretching for two minutes. Sitting quietly with your coffee. Opening a window. Whatever takes less than five minutes and feels like it belongs to you, not to your inbox or your notifications.
This matters because the first thing you do in the morning tends to set the tone for how reactive versus intentional the rest of your day feels. Starting with something you chose — even something tiny — creates a small but real sense of agency.
You don't need to overhaul anything. You don't need to wake up earlier. You just need one moment that's yours before the day pulls you in every direction.
Try it for a week and notice whether anything shifts. It might not feel dramatic. That's fine. Small and sustainable beats ambitious and abandoned.
