Most of us have felt it: you finally sit down to rest, and within minutes you're scrolling, half-watching something, or mentally running through tomorrow's to-do list. You're physically still, but your mind hasn't landed anywhere. That's not really rest — and yet it's what most people default to when they're tired.
True rest looks different for different people. For some, it's a 20-minute nap. For others, it's a slow walk without headphones, or fifteen minutes of doing nothing in particular. The common thread isn't the activity itself — it's the quality of disengagement from output mode.
If you've been feeling chronically drained lately, it's worth asking: when did I last do something genuinely restorative? Not productive, not relaxing in that vague scroll-through-your-phone way — actually restorative. Something that left you feeling a little more like yourself afterward.
A few things that tend to help, though no list works for everyone:
None of this is revolutionary. But the gap between knowing something and actually allowing yourself to do it is where most rest deficits live.
You don't have to overhaul your routine or practice the perfect form of rest. Just notice what leaves you feeling a little less depleted — and try to do slightly more of that this week. That's enough.
