Took the 31 from the depot end of things this morning, meaning to walk the whole stretch from Battlefield down to the river and back up through Tradeston. Fourteen kilometres, I reckoned. My reckoning, as usual, was optimistic.

I got off at the right stop but immediately turned left instead of right and spent a good quarter hour heading purposefully toward Shawlands before the grid stopped making sense. Flipped out the street map, which a woman with a buggy found quietly amusing. I can't blame her.

There's a building on Eglinton Street I always mean to look at properly, and today I finally stopped. Just above a former shopfront — letting agent now, naturally — there's a painted ghost sign, cream letters bleeding through white render. I think it says "Provisions and Groceries." The P is nearly gone, but the tall curved R is still perfect. I stood there long enough that a man leaving the letting agent gave me a measured look. Some letters stay legible longer than the whole word survives.

Walked the 75 route today, terminus to terminus — or the southern half of it, Castlemilk down to Bridgeton, which was already more ambition than I'd originally planned when I looked out the window at quarter to ten and decided it wasn't actively raining.

It was actively raining by the time I reached the terminus.

The drizzle had that particular October quality of not committing either way: too fine to justify pulling a hood up, persistent enough to get your collar damp within twenty minutes. Dreich is the word, and it earns its place in the language. I set off down the hill with the map already softening at the fold lines.

Took the 57 from its Castlemilk terminus this morning, meaning to walk the route back toward the city rather than catch the return bus. Had the map folded to the wrong quadrant for a solid ten minutes before I noticed, which set a reliable tone for the rest of the day.

The stretch through Toryglen is not what you'd call scenic but it has a logic to it — houses set back from the road in that particular post-war way, as if they're being polite. Someone had arranged three wheelie bins into an approximate pyramid outside a close on Prospecthill Road. I don't know why. I didn't ask. I did stop and look at it longer than was warranted.

Coming down into Rutherglen the high street was doing its Monday thing: quieter than a Saturday, more honest about it. A few folk with messages, a man outside a bookies reading his phone with the solemn concentration of a scholar. I passed a bakery vent and caught the warm-flour smell of something just pulled from the oven, which was enough to make me stop and go in. Square sausage roll, still hot through the paper bag. Ate it at the corner of Main Street, burned the roof of my mouth, because that's what I do.

The sidewalk outside the corner bakery smelled like butter and yeast at 7:43 this morning, which is either the best or worst thing to encounter when you're trying to convince yourself that black coffee counts as breakfast. I lost that argument. Walked out with a cardamom bun that left sugar crystals on my jacket sleeve.

I've been experimenting with taking different routes to the same coffee shop—change one variable, see what shifts. Today I turned left instead of right at the bookstore, which added maybe four minutes but replaced my usual view of the parking garage with a narrow alley where someone had painted a mural of oversized houseplants. The monstera leaves were taller than I am. There's something oddly reassuring about public art that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Halfway down the block, I passed two people arguing gently about whether the place on the corner sold "coffee" or "burnt water pretending to be coffee." One of them was holding a to-go cup from that exact place. The loyalty of a regular customer is a strange and beautiful thing.

I took a different route to the coffee shop this morning—left instead of right at the intersection—and ended up in a pocket neighborhood I'd walked past a hundred times but never through. The light hit differently here, filtering through plane trees that hadn't been pruned into submission like the ones on the main boulevard. Actual dappled shade. I'd forgotten that was a real thing and not just a phrase food bloggers use to describe outdoor seating.

There was a woman watering her window boxes, and when I slowed down to admire the overflowing nasturtiums, she said, "They're bullies, you know. Choke out everything else." She said it fondly, the way you'd describe a badly behaved cat. I asked if she minded, and she shrugged. "Orange is orange. Can't argue with that." Which felt like unexpectedly solid life advice at 8:47 on a Tuesday.

I kept walking and realized I'd left my usual coffee order behind in my muscle memory. Standing at the counter of a different café—one with actually uncomfortable stools, which I respected—I blanked completely. The barista waited. I said, "Flat white?" like I was guessing on a test. It arrived tasting like every flat white I've ever had, which raises the question: what exactly have I been optimizing for all these years?

The metro escalator groaned its usual Monday morning complaint as I descended into the station, but something was different today. Instead of the typical crush of commuters, the platform was nearly empty—some holiday I'd forgotten about, probably. I took the opportunity to walk the long way through the underground passage, the one with the old tile mosaics that everyone usually rushes past.

There's a particular mosaic panel near the east exit that's always caught my eye: a stylized map of the city from 1973, all optimistic arrows and geometric shapes. Today I actually stopped to read the little brass plaque beneath it. Turns out the artist died before finishing it, and his students completed the last section. You can see it if you look closely—the eastern district has slightly different colors, a warmer palette. I'd walked past this thing hundreds of times and never noticed.

Above ground, I decided to take the river path instead of my usual route. The cherry trees aren't blooming yet, but there were these tiny green buds on every branch, packed tight like they're just waiting for permission. An older man was doing tai chi near the bridge, moving so slowly it looked like he was underwater. I tried to match his pace for about ten steps—failed spectacularly. Apparently, moving that deliberately requires more control than moving quickly. Who knew?

Found myself wandering through the old quarter this morning, the kind of aimless drift that starts with coffee and ends who-knows-where. The bakery on Elm was already sending out waves of butter and yeast—that specific 6 AM smell that makes you forgive a city for basically everything else it does to you.

Took a wrong turn near the antique shop (which I'm 90% sure is a front for something, given it's never actually open) and stumbled into a courtyard I'd walked past a hundred times without noticing. Brick archway, maybe four feet wide, easy to miss if you're looking at your phone. Which I was. Until I wasn't.

Inside: three elderly men playing cards at a folding table, a ginger cat supervising from a windowsill, morning light coming in at that perfect angle that makes dust look intentional. One of the men glanced up and said, "Lost or exploring?" I laughed and said both, probably. He nodded like that was the only correct answer and went back to his hand.

Discovered a new shortcut through the old market district this morning, one of those accidental detours that happens when you trust your feet more than Google Maps. The air shifted the moment I turned the corner—woodsmoke mixing with fresh bread and something sharp I couldn't quite place. Cardamom, maybe? The cobblestones were still damp from last night's rain, catching the early light in a way that made the whole street look like it had been dipped in silver.

An elderly shopkeeper was arranging oranges in a perfect pyramid, muttering something about "gravity and patience" when one rolled away. I caught it mid-bounce and handed it back. She looked at me like I'd performed a minor miracle, then said in broken English, "Fast hands, slow brain—good for travel." I'm still not entirely sure if that was a compliment, but I'm choosing to take it as one.

I made the rookie mistake of stopping at every single vendor selling the same embroidered bags, convinced I'd find "the perfect one" if I just kept looking. Twenty minutes and zero purchases later, I realized they were all identical except for one thread color. The lesson? Sometimes abundance is just an illusion with better lighting. I picked the fourth shop because the owner's cat was asleep on the counter, which felt like as good a reason as any.

The puddle on Fifth Avenue was shaped exactly like Italy—boot and all. I stopped mid-stride to admire it, causing a man in a peacoat to swerve around me with an exasperated sigh. Sorry, sir, cartography waits for no one.

I've been testing a theory this week: if you walk the same route at different times of day, you meet entirely different cities. Morning Fifth is all coffee cups and determined strides. Lunch hour brings the tourists with their cameras angled skyward. But 3 PM on a Friday? That's when the city exhales. The pace slows. People actually look at storefronts instead of blowing past them.

Today I caught myself doing that thing where I narrate my surroundings like a nature documentary. "Here we observe the urban commuter in its natural habitat, navigating the treacherous terrain of scaffolding and sidewalk dining sheds." A woman waiting for the crosswalk gave me a look that suggested I'd said this out loud. Oops.

The crosswalk signal had been stuck on red for what felt like three minutes, and I found myself studying the pigeon pecking at a discarded croissant wrapper. It was so focused, so committed to extracting invisible crumbs from the waxed paper, that I wondered if maybe I was overthinking my entire route. The light changed, but I stayed another moment, watching this bird treat failure like a temporary setback.

I'd taken the long way to the post office this morning, deliberately choosing the street with the vintage bookshop and the corner where someone always leaves piano music drifting from a third-floor window. The detour added twelve minutes—I timed it—but something about the rhythm of my steps felt different. Less errand, more expedition. The usual route is efficient, straight lines and subway shortcuts, but efficiency doesn't photograph well in memory.

Outside the bookshop, a woman was rearranging the outdoor cart, and I overheard her say to someone, "We can't keep romance and true crime on the same shelf anymore. People get confused." I wanted to know more about what kind of confusion warranted a rearrangement, but I kept walking. Some mysteries are better left as questions you smile about later.

This morning I decided to walk a different route to the coffee shop—exactly one block east of my usual path. It's strange how such a small deviation can make a familiar neighborhood feel completely foreign. The light hit the buildings at a different angle, casting long shadows that turned ordinary storefronts into geometric puzzles.

There's a bakery on this street I'd never noticed before, despite walking parallel to it for two years. The window was fogged from the inside, and through it I could see a baker pulling trays from an oven. The smell of butter and yeast stopped me mid-step. This is what I'd been missing by staying in my routine.

I went inside. The woman at the counter looked up and said, "First time?" with a knowing smile. I must have had that particular lost-tourist expression, even though I live four minutes away. "That obvious?" I asked. She laughed and handed me a sample of some kind of twisted pastry that tasted like cardamom and honey.

The metro doors opened at Bundang Station and I stepped into what I can only describe as an accidental symphony. A street musician's saxophone was harmonizing—completely by chance—with someone's phone alarm three meters away. Both playing the same key. The odds felt astronomical, but there they were, creating this weird, perfect accident of sound that made about fifteen of us stop and look around like we'd stumbled into a flash mob.

I've been walking the same route from the station to the coffee district for three weeks now, and today I finally tried something different: took the western exit instead of eastern. Tiny change, completely different world. The western side has this narrow alley lined with persimmon trees that I had no idea existed. Some of the fruit had fallen and split open on the pavement, filling the whole passage with this sweet, almost fermented smell. A grandmother was sweeping them into a bucket.

"Waste to leave them," she said in Korean when she caught me staring, and I nodded even though I only understood half of it. She handed me one, perfectly ripe, and gestured for me to take it. I tried to politely refuse but she'd already turned back to her sweeping. I ended up eating it on a bench two blocks later—messy, sticky-fingered, probably looking ridiculous, but it was the best thing I'd tasted all week.
