There is a moment in Arooj Aftab's Vulture Prince where time seems to unhinge itself. The strings enter — unhurried, almost reluctant — and her voice follows like something remembered rather than performed. I've been sitting with this record again this week, and I am no closer to explaining what it does to me. That feels right.

Aftab is a Pakistani-American composer and vocalist working in a space that resists easy labeling. Her music draws from Hindustani classical tradition, Sufi devotional song, and contemporary minimalism, yet it never announces these influences the way a genre exercise would. They arrive as texture, as atmosphere. She seems less interested in showcasing her sources than in dissolving them into something genuinely new.

Vulture Prince was dedicated to her late brother, and that grief is present throughout — not as sentiment, but as weight. There is a specific quality of loss that doesn't dramatize itself, that simply is, and Aftab captures it with disarming precision. The album's centerpiece, "Mohabbat," builds so slowly you almost miss when it has become overwhelming.

There is a moment, somewhere between the third and fourth track, when a record stops being background music and becomes the room itself. I found that moment again last night with Arooj Aftab's Vulture Prince — a record I have returned to more times than I can count, and one that continues to give.

Aftab's voice enters without ceremony. No dramatic build, no introductory flourish. Just sound, unhurried and certain, as if the music had always been present and we are simply now paying attention. She works in a tradition — South Asian classical, Sufi devotional music — but she does not wear that tradition as costume. It breathes through her arrangements the way ancestry breathes through a face: recognizable, defining, and entirely her own.

What strikes me most, returning to this album on a warm August evening, is how grief and beauty are made inseparable here. Vulture Prince was dedicated to her late brother, and that loss is present on every track — not as spectacle, but as weight. The harp lines, played with extraordinary restraint, carry something they cannot name. The silences between notes feel earned rather than empty.

There is a moment, somewhere in the middle of Arooj Aftab's Vulture Prince, when the room stops being a room. It happened on a Tuesday evening last spring — the record was on low, half-listened to while I was reading, and then suddenly I wasn't reading anymore. I was somewhere else entirely, suspended in a space between grief and tenderness that I hadn't known music could map so precisely.

Aftab's work defies easy categorization, which is exactly why it demands attention. Born in Pakistan, trained in Boston, based in New York, she draws from Urdu classical traditions, jazz harmony, and minimal ambient production in ways that feel inevitable rather than experimental. Vulture Prince was written in the wake of her brother's death, and that loss shapes every note — not as melodrama, but as something more patient and more devastating: the ordinary persistence of grief in a beautiful world.

The opener, "Baghon Mein," begins with her voice unaccompanied, then gradually gathers orchestration around itself like light accumulating at dawn. By the time the strings arrive, you've been lulled into a vulnerability you didn't quite prepare for. This is the album's essential movement: it earns its emotional weight slowly, without announcing its intentions.

There's a moment in Arooj Aftab's "Mohabbat" where her voice seems to suspend time itself. The Urdu ghazal tradition meets ambient jazz in a way that shouldn't work on paper, but in practice creates something transcendent. I first heard it late at night, headphones on, and found myself holding my breath between phrases.

Aftab's approach to traditional Pakistani poetry is revolutionary precisely because it refuses to choose between reverence and reinvention. Her voice floats over spare instrumentation—upright bass that breathes rather than walks, tabla that whispers instead of announces. The space between notes becomes as important as the notes themselves. This is music that trusts silence, that understands emptiness as a form of fullness.

What strikes me most is how she makes centuries-old poetry feel urgently contemporary. The ghazal form, with its themes of longing and separation, speaks directly to our current moment of digital distance and yearning for genuine connection. When she stretches a single syllable across measures, you feel the weight of that longing in your chest.

I keep returning to Migrations, the new album from cellist Abel Selaocoe, and each listen reveals something I missed before. It's rare to find music that exists so comfortably in multiple worlds at once—classical technique meets South African folk tradition meets experimental improvisation—without ever feeling fragmented or forced.

The opening track, "Ke Batla Ho Bina," begins with what sounds like a simple Sesotho lullaby, Selaocoe's voice warm and unhurried. Then the cello enters, not as accompaniment but as conversation partner, weaving around the melody with such intimacy you forget these are separate instruments. The bow work is exquisite—those years of conservatory training evident in every sustained note—but what strikes me most is the freedom in his playing. He's not trying to prove anything. He's simply making the music that needs to exist.

By the third track, percussion enters: hands on wood, breath becoming rhythm. The cello becomes drum, voice, and string instrument simultaneously. This is where Selaocoe's vision fully emerges. He's not fusing traditions; he's revealing connections that were always there, obscured by arbitrary genre boundaries and colonial music education systems that insisted on separation.
