You know that feeling when you're exhausted, but you can't quite let yourself rest because you haven't "earned" it yet? Maybe you didn't finish everything on your to-do list, or you only worked six hours instead of eight, or you just feel like you haven't done enough to deserve a break.
I've been thinking about this a lot lately, especially after talking with friends who run themselves into the ground before allowing themselves to rest. There's this pervasive idea that rest is a reward for productivity, something you unlock after meeting certain criteria. But that's not how our bodies and minds work.
Rest isn't a luxury you earn—it's a biological necessity, like breathing or eating. You wouldn't wait until you've "done enough" to take your next breath, would you? Yet somehow we've convinced ourselves that exhaustion is a prerequisite for rest.
Here's what I've learned: rest is most effective when you take it before you desperately need it. Think of it like charging your phone. You don't wait until it hits 1% every single time. You charge it when you have the opportunity, so it's ready when you need it.
What does this look like in practice? It might mean taking that lunch break even when you're "on a roll" with work. It could mean saying no to weekend plans when you genuinely need downtime, without having to justify it with a list of everything you accomplished that week. It might mean going to bed at a reasonable hour instead of staying up to squeeze in one more task.
I'm not suggesting you abandon all responsibilities and rest constantly. That's not realistic or helpful. What I am suggesting is that you stop treating rest as something you need permission for. You don't need to hit a productivity quota to justify taking care of yourself.
If you find this mindset shift difficult, try this: for one week, take rest breaks at scheduled times rather than waiting until you're depleted. Notice how you feel. You might find that you actually get more done because you're working from a place of energy rather than pushing through exhaustion.
Your worth isn't measured by your output. Rest doesn't need to be earned. It just needs to be taken.
