You know that advice about drinking eight glasses of water a day? I used to beat myself up about it constantly. Some days I'd realize at 9 PM that I'd had maybe two sips since breakfast, then force myself to chug water before bed—which just meant waking up at 3 AM.
Here's what actually worked: I stopped trying to be perfect and started being practical.
I bought a water bottle I genuinely liked looking at. Sounds silly, but it mattered. Mine has time markers on the side, which helps, but honestly the main thing is that it lives on my desk where I can see it. Out of sight really is out of mind.
I paired drinking water with things I already do. Every time I finish a work task, I take a few sips. When I'm on a call and the other person is talking, I drink. Waiting for my coffee to brew? Perfect water moment.
The game-changer was giving myself permission to count other liquids. That morning tea? It counts. The soup at lunch? Hydration. The cucumber in my salad? It all adds up. Pure water is great, but if you're getting fluids from different sources throughout the day, you're doing fine.
I also learned to read my actual body instead of arbitrary rules. Thirsty? Drink. Dry lips? Drink. Headache creeping in? Often it's dehydration. Your body is pretty good at signaling what it needs if you pay attention.
Some days I nail hydration. Other days are messier. Both are fine. The goal isn't perfection—it's just maintaining enough consistency that your body functions well most of the time.
If you're someone who struggles with this, try one small shift. Not eight glasses tomorrow. Just one more than you had today. That's progress, and progress is what actually sticks.
