The door was already open when Sera arrived at the archive.
She stopped in the corridor, one hand braced against the frame. The lock had been replaced just yesterday — she'd watched the technician install it herself. Biometric. Rated for a Class 7 clearance. And now it hung ajar, its panel dark.
Inside, the amber emergency lighting painted long shadows across the shelves. Rows of memory cores, each one containing someone's extracted consciousness, lined the walls like sleeping insects in amber. Everything looked untouched.
Almost everything.
The pedestal in the center of the room was empty.
Core 7-Omega. Gone.
Sera crossed to the pedestal slowly, cataloguing details the way Wren had taught her: no forced entry, no disturbed dust on the adjacent shelves, no scuff marks on the floor. Whoever had taken it knew the room. Knew the routing paths. Knew her.
Her earpiece crackled.
"Tell me you're not inside."
"Wren." She exhaled. "How did you know?"
"Because I'm the one who triggered the alarm," he said quietly. "Sera. You need to leave. Right now. They're not gone — they're waiting to see who comes back for it."
She turned slowly in the amber dark. The shelves seemed to breathe around her.
"And what's inside 7-Omega that's worth a trap?"
A long pause. The kind Wren used when he was deciding how much truth to spend.
"Someone who isn't supposed to exist anymore," he said. "Someone who asked for you, specifically, before they went under."
The lights cut out completely.
In the darkness, from somewhere behind the farthest shelf, she heard footsteps begin.
