The message came at 3:47 AM, and Nora almost didn't see it.
She'd been asleep for exactly eleven minutes — she knew because she'd checked her phone at 3:36, cursed the insomnia, and finally closed her eyes — when the notification lit up the ceiling. One message from an unknown number. Six words.
You left something at the station.
Nora sat up. She hadn't been to a train station in four years. Not since the night her sister disappeared from Platform 9 of Harrow & Wealdstone, coat folded neatly on the bench, shoes beside it, a single earring placed on top like a period at the end of a sentence.
She typed back: Who is this?
Three dots appeared. Stopped. Appeared again.
Someone who saw what you missed.
The rational part of her brain — the part that had spent four years building a careful, walled-off life in Edinburgh — said to block the number and go back to sleep. She'd had crackpots before. People who'd read the news coverage, who'd found her email, who claimed to know things.
But the next message contained a photo.
It was the earring. Her earring — a small silver crane, one of a pair their mother had brought back from Kyoto, that Nora had held in her palm at the police station while she'd answered questions she didn't have answers to. The earring Nora had assumed was lost in evidence storage or simply gone.
In the photo, it was resting on a red velvet surface. Beside it, barely visible at the edge of the frame: a hand. Pale, long-fingered, wearing a ring Nora had never seen before.
Her phone buzzed again.
Paddington. Platform 1. 6 AM. Come alone or I disappear too.
Nora stared at the ceiling for ten seconds. Then she got out of bed and reached for her coat.
