The message arrived at 2:47 a.m., which was the first sign something was wrong.

Nora had been awake anyway, sitting at her kitchen table with cold coffee and a stack of bills she couldn't pay. When her phone lit up, she thought: Cass. It has to be Cass.

The card arrived on a Tuesday, slipped under my apartment door like a secret. No postage, no return address—just my name in silver ink that seemed to shift in the light.

ELENA VOSS. YOU ARE INVITED.

I turned it over. On the back, coordinates and a time: 11:47 PM. Tonight.

The key clicked in the lock at 2:47 AM—exactly when it shouldn't have.

Sarah froze, her breath catching in her throat. The apartment had been empty for six years. The landlord swore no one else had keys. Yet there it was again: that distinct metallic click, followed by the whisper of hinges that needed oil.

She should have called the police. She knew that. But something about the careful, almost reverent way the door opened made her reach for her phone's camera instead.

The coffee shop door chimed, and Elena froze mid-sip. She'd recognize that silhouette anywhere—broad shoulders, deliberate stride, the slight hesitation before scanning the room. Marcus. Three years, and her body still remembered.

Their eyes met. His widened first, then narrowed. Not surprise. Recognition and something else. Calculation, maybe. Or regret.

He walked toward her table. Elena set down her cup, steadying her hand.

The stranger appeared at the diner exactly at midnight, just as Nora was flipping the sign to "CLOSED."

"We're done for the night," she called through the glass, but he was already pushing the door open, the bell chiming its protest.

"I know." His voice was quiet, measured. "That's why I'm here."
