The letter arrived on a Tuesday, which was wrong. Elena had specified Mondays. She'd been very clear about that when she set up the dead drop three years ago — Mondays only, and only if it's urgent.
She turned the envelope over in her hands. No postmark. No return address. Just her name in handwriting she didn't recognize.
This isn't from Marcus.
The envelope had no return address. That was the first sign.
Lena turned it over twice before sliding her finger beneath the seal. Inside: a single photograph, black and white, printed on paper so old the edges had gone soft. A woman stood in front of a building Lena recognized immediately — the Hartwell Hotel, demolished in 1987, the year before Lena was born.
The woman in the photograph was Lena.
The envelope wasn't supposed to be there.
Sarah found it wedged beneath her apartment door at 2 AM, her key still trembling in the lock. No postage. No return address. Just her name in handwriting she'd spent three years trying to forget.
She didn't open it. Not yet.
The envelope wasn't postmarked.
Elena held it up to the kitchen light, turning the thick cream paper over in her hands. Her name—Dr. Elena Voss—was written in fountain pen, the letters precise and elegant. Too elegant for junk mail. Too personal for a colleague.
She broke the seal.
The photograph arrived on a Tuesday, slipped under my apartment door with no envelope, no return address.
Just her face. My sister's face. Emily, who'd been dead for three years.
But here's the thing—the photo was dated two days ago.
The envelope had no return address, just my name in red ink that looked suspiciously like dried blood.
I should've thrown it away. Instead, I tore it open at my kitchen table, coffee going cold beside me.
You have three days.
The red envelope arrived on a Tuesday, which was her first clue something had gone terribly wrong.
Olivia had stopped checking her mailbox months ago. After the divorce, after the foreclosure notice, after her mother's funeral—what was the point? Bills could wait. Creditors could wait. The whole world could wait while she figured out how to breathe again.
But today, something made her open the rusted metal door. Perhaps it was the way morning light caught the edge of the box, or the strange silence that had settled over her street. Either way, her fingers closed around the crimson envelope, and she knew—she knew—that opening it would change everything.
The apartment smelled like burnt coffee and bad decisions when I woke to find Marcus gone. Again.
His note sat on the kitchen counter: Meet me at the lighthouse. Midnight. Come alone.
Same damn lighthouse where my sister disappeared three years ago. Where the police found her jacket but nothing else. Where I'd sworn I'd never return.
