The meeting ended earlier than expected, which should have been a relief. Instead I sat at my desk for ten minutes doing nothing in particular — not resting, not thinking, just occupying the chair. My jaw was tight. The back of my eyes felt slightly pressured, the way they do after too much screen glare, though the blinds had been down all morning. I noticed I was running a quiet audit of everything I'd said in the call, looking for the moment I'd overstepped or underperformed. The feeling underneath all that: something close to low-grade shame, though I can't locate a cause for it yet.

I've been tracking mornings for nine days now. The experiment started simply enough: I wanted to see whether my mood at 9am correlated more strongly with how I'd slept or with what I'd done the hour before bed. The parameters are loose —

Sleep quality: a one-to-five note written before I get up
Evening activity: screen / reading / nothing in particular
Mood at 9am: one word, nothing evaluative

So far the signal is murkier than I expected. Two nights of reading before bed produced one good morning and one flat one. Last Thursday I watched a film until midnight and woke up calm. I don't know what to do with that yet, so I'm leaving the hypothesis open another five days.

What I'm noticing more than the data itself is the act of noticing. There's a small shift that happens when I treat a bad morning as information rather than evidence of something wrong with me. The shoulders come down a little. The audit stops running. I suspect the observation is doing some of the work, though I can't rule out that I'm just habituating to my own discomfort and calling it equanimity.

The question I'm sitting with: is the shame that arrived after the meeting something I brought into the room before it started?

I'll check Tuesday's note against how I slept Monday night. I'm not deciding anything about the caffeine yet.
