We wake up each morning and make a hundred small choices—what to wear, what to eat, which route to take. Most of these feel automatic, beneath the threshold of real decision-making. But what if each choice, no matter how trivial, is an exercise in freedom?

The existentialists would argue that even our most mundane selections carry weight. When I choose oatmeal over toast, I'm not just satisfying hunger; I'm authoring a tiny chapter of my life's narrative. The weight isn't in the oatmeal itself, but in the fact that I could have chosen otherwise.

This feels overwhelming at first. If every choice matters, aren't we condemned to paralyzing analysis? But perhaps the opposite is true. Perhaps recognizing the significance of small choices liberates us from the tyranny of only caring about the "big" decisions—career, marriage, where to live. Those milestone moments don't define us any more than the accumulation of our daily choices does.

Consider the ritual of making coffee. The water temperature, the grind size, the pour technique—these could be mindless steps. Or they could be a meditation on care, precision, and presence. The difference isn't in the coffee; it's in our awareness of what we're doing and why.

But here's the complication: can we truly choose our choices? Are we free agents or products of genetics, upbringing, and circumstance? When I prefer tea to coffee, is that my preference, or just the echo of my grandmother's afternoon ritual?

Maybe freedom isn't about choosing from a blank slate. Maybe it's about choosing how we relate to our conditioning. We can't erase our past, but we can question whether its influence over us is one we accept or resist.

The next time you face a simple decision—taking the stairs or the elevator, calling a friend or scrolling through feeds—pause for a breath. Not to make the "right" choice, but to notice that you're choosing at all. In that noticing, however brief, lies the thread of freedom we're all grasping for.

What choices have you made today without noticing? And what might change if you did?
