7.2 km this morning along the canal, 6:14 start, average pace 5:48 per kilometre. Exactly what the plan called for.

Session log:

Easy run, canal path, 7.2 km

6.2 km. That was the run this morning — shorter than planned, but I made the call at the canal bridge and turned back.

Session log:

Easy run, canal path, 6.2 km

7.2 km. That was the run this morning, out along the canal before six. Supposed to be eight but the left Achilles gave me that familiar tightness around the second kilometre and I trimmed the route rather than push through it.

Session log:

Easy run, canal path

6:41 per kilometre. That was the pace on this morning's canal run, and it felt exactly where a Friday run should sit.

Resting heart rate was 52 when I checked it before getting up — one beat above Wednesday's, which is fine. Sleep was 6 hours 40 minutes, which is less fine. The alarm went off at 5:50 and I lay there a few minutes before moving. By Friday the school week has its full weight on, and this week had a swimming trip with the junior infants on Wednesday and parent-teacher letters to draft yesterday evening. The legs on the canal felt heavy in the first kilometre, then settled.

Session log:

7:04 — the average pace on the Wicklow climb this morning, one minute eleven seconds slower than last Sunday. I had the numbers before I had an explanation.

Sunday long ride. Route: Rathfarnham out to Sally Gap and back. Distance: 74 km. Moving time: 3h 09. Elevation: 1,140 m. Perceived effort: 7/10. Average HR: 152 bpm. Sleep last night: 6.2 hours.

The legs were flat from the first pedal stroke out of the city. Not painful, just absent — that particular kind of tired where the power simply isn't there and pushing harder doesn't summon it. I noticed it most on the lower slopes of the Gap, where I usually find a rhythm. Today I dropped to the small chainring around the first bend and stayed there all the way up. No drama in that. It was the correct gear. The descent was fine. The wind had come round to the southwest by the time I turned for home, which helped.

7.2 hours sleep last night. That was the number I noted first this morning — not exceptional, but enough to feel functional.

Up at 6:40. The plan was a longer ride into the Wicklow foothills: roughly 70 km, around 900 m of climbing. Rolled out by 7:15. Overcast, about 11°C, a light headwind from the south-west on the way out toward Kilmacanogue.

Session log:

The alarm went off at 5:15, and for once I didn't hit snooze. The floor was cold under my feet—that sharp wake-up call that beats any coffee. I'd planned a heavy squat session, but halfway through my warm-up sets, my lower back sent a clear signal: not today.

Old me would've pushed through. Ego loves a planned workout more than a smart one. But I've learned that discipline isn't just about showing up—it's about listening when your body asks for a detour. So I swapped the barbell for a 20-minute mobility flow and some light kettlebell work. My hip flexors were tighter than I realized, probably from yesterday's run.

Today's adjusted routine:

Woke up at 5:47 this morning—three minutes before the alarm. My body's finally syncing with the routine after two weeks of consistency. The air was cold enough that I could see my breath when I stepped outside for the warm-up jog.

Today's session:

10-minute dynamic warm-up

The gym was nearly empty at 6 AM, just the hum of the ventilation system and the rhythmic clank of someone's deadlift across the room. I'd planned a heavy squat session, but the moment I unracked the bar for my warm-up set, my lower back sent a clear signal—tightness from yesterday's volume work hadn't fully released.

Here's where I made my mistake: I pushed through the second warm-up set anyway, telling myself it would "loosen up." It didn't. By the third rep, I knew I was compensating with my hips. I racked the weight, stepped back, and had to make a call—ego or longevity?

I switched the entire session. Goblet squats, Romanian deadlifts with perfect tempo, and 15 minutes of focused mobility work I've been skipping all week. Not the workout I wanted, but exactly the one I needed. The tightness started to release around rep 12 of the third RDL set—that deep stretch in the hamstrings that feels like untying a knot.

The gym was quieter than usual this morning—just the steady rhythm of weights clinking and the low hum of the ventilation system. I noticed how the early light cut through the high windows, casting long shadows across the floor. There's something grounding about training when most people are still asleep.

Today's session was strength-focused: deadlifts, overhead press, and accessory work. I made a mistake on my second set of deadlifts—rushed the setup because I was feeling good, and my form broke down halfway through the fourth rep. Had to drop the weight and reset. The lesson was immediate: confidence without preparation is just carelessness. Took an extra minute before each set after that, and the rest of the session felt clean.

Between sets, someone asked me about programming rest days. "How do you know when to push and when to back off?" I told them what I've learned the hard way: your body whispers before it shouts. Recovery isn't the opposite of discipline—it's part of it. If you're disciplined about training, you need to be equally disciplined about rest, sleep, and nutrition.

Woke up to the sound of rain hitting the windows—that steady rhythm that usually makes you want to stay in bed. For a moment, I almost did. The warm blanket versus the cold morning air, the classic internal negotiation. But I remembered what I told myself last week: consistency beats perfection. So I got up, put on my running shoes, and headed out.

The streets were empty and slick with rain. Each step sent up a small splash, and the cool drops on my face actually felt good once I got moving. I kept the pace easy, reminding myself that this wasn't about speed or distance. It was about showing up. By the time I finished the 5k loop, I felt more awake than any coffee could make me.

Morning routine:

Woke up at 5:30 AM to the sound of rain tapping against the window. The air felt heavy and cool—perfect weather for an indoor session. I had planned hill sprints, but the wet pavement made me reconsider. Sometimes discipline means knowing when to pivot, not just pushing through regardless.
